Gerber 30-000183 Lhr Knife Preview
First off, I want to squash all the sheath hating with the following words. Within minutes of handling this system, I was already drawing the knife out of it's sheath with no problem. It's called using your thumb, as another customer pointed out here. This sheath was designed with a special purpose in mind, and that is to protect YOU from someone using YOUR own knife against YOU. But I guess Gerber, Matt Larsen, William Harsey, and Chris Reeve forgot about all the mall ninjas out there... or wait, maybe they didn't. There are two screws that you can remove the locking mechanism with. Happy self-cutting! :)
On to the knife! I am an avid fixed blade knife collector and endorse Gerber products because they work for me. I also like the fact that leading knife collectors, close quarters combat specialists, and senior metallurgists and engineers participate with Gerber to make knives. With that being said, I own a Silver Trident, Freeman Guide, Big Rock Camp (Designed by William Harsey), LMF II, Prodigy, and now this LHR (All fixed blade). The LHR is no exception in the quality Gerber and it's designers put into the product. I'm not going to cover specs or materials because you can look that up here or on the Gerber Gear web site, but I will tell you a few things.
When you pick this knife up, you know it means business. There is no doubt remaining that this knife was built for combat, but with a surviving edge to it as well. When comparing it to the full combat-oriented Silver Trident and the Survival/Egress-oriented LMF II, you realize that Gerber implemented both qualities into one platform, which is the LHR. This happened in both function and price as the LHR is somewhat between the Trident and LMF II in pricing. The LHR has a thick and somewhat "tapering" spline as you get to the point but it's still good enough to baton with, and the serrations are small enough to not matter to plain blade buffs, but be there when you have that thick rope you need to cut through immediately.
The hand guards with finger-grooved grip are superb, and the true full tang design is outstanding. The pommel of the knife ends in a sharp glass breaker that will help you egress a vehicle or break bone when dressing game. This knife feels like a knife. Also not too heavy and perfectly balanced. The name of the three men involved in it's production are laser etched onto the back of the blade. This is a keeper to my collection. And to all you guys crying about how hard it is to pull out of the sheath, look at the bigger picture; with some practice, you (the operator) can draw this knife lightning fast, while your opponent will still have the same percentage of drawing it against you, zero.
My pics are coming soon to Amazon's listing for this product! :)
