Spyderco Military G-10 Handle Plain Edge Knife On Sale
Disclaimer - I am a fixed blade lover/believer/carrier - if I had to have one knife, it would always be a fixed blade. I even carry small fixed blades on my neck at times, belt at times, and a RAT (ESEE) Izula in my EDC bag.
BUT - there are times when you want a great folder - or maybe a great slicer. Or a featherweight knife (yes, it IS very light). A friend knew of my love of fixed blades - and a childhood horror story of a folder about taking my fingers off) and said he would prove to me a folder had a place.
I was presented with a Left handed version with the new steel and the G10 handles as proof.
The history of this knife is well known - check it out. The story behind it is solid. Sal at Spiderco is a dedicated owner to his passionate customers...it's a good match. They stand behind their product well. There is a reason the knife has been in almost constant production for over a decade...and many say it's the single folder that all large folders are judged against.
I'm not sure about that last line - as I doubt I'll ever own another folder. First, I won't buy one, and second the Military will last the next 40-5- years of my life and then some. It's that tough.
I won't be using it to build a shelter, spit wood, or dig a hole like I could with a fixed blade...but cleaning a fish, cutting rope, and even mundane tasks like opening boxes seem tailor made for the Spiderco Military. I've carried this knife either on my person or in my bag for about 6 months now. It's still as razorsharp as when I got it, the full flat grind makes it easy to sharpen. If you are so inclined, Spiderco will put a scary edge on it for only $5 anytime you want them too...that's gotta be great for those who struggle with a stone. buy two, use one and send it back, rotate the other one to useage. pretty cool.
It carries really well in my dress slacks or shorts or even sweatpants...it's so light that it can even be carried in the pocket of mesh basketball shorts and it won't drag down that side.
The lock-up seems very tight and give a nice loud click. It has no movement in the blade, and seems very strong. Again, I'm not going to test it much...but I don't fear it closing accidently on me while I'm using for what I do use it for.
Presentation is simple, fast, and quite impressive. Should the need ever arise and I'm not in an area that I can carry my firearm legally...the Military does have quite a deterent effect. My state has no limit on the length of blade, make sure to check yours of course.
So, if you love folders...this is a great one. And even if you don't trust them completely like I don't...this one will give you a lot of confidence in its use.
