I've owned many high-quality, factory-made knives over the years such as Benchmade, Cold Steel, Microtech, MOD (pre-Blackhawk), and Spyderco. I moved my gun to appendix carry and my knife to a 4 o'clock position, so I was needing a tip-up carry knife to be able to obtain a quick and proper grip. I wanted a good balance between quality and price. I can't justify to my spouse spending $100+ on a knife when I already have so many. *chuckle*
I was a bit wary of the CRKT knives; mostly because of arrogance with the brands I've owned. I've owned a Stiff KISS and one of the M16s, and they were decent but unmemorable. I also wasn't keen on a Chinese made knife. But I decided, for forty bucks, why not give it a try again?
The blade length is legal for my area, the low profile conceals well, and the blade shape is strong and is also a happy medium between thrusting and slashing. If you've got sweaty palms, this may not be the knife for you - in order to get the scales curved, the G10 was sanded down, removing much of the grippy texture. There are no finger grooves, so if you prefer thrusting, your hand may very well slide down the grip and onto the blade. To help prevent that, you'll have to hold the butt of the knife into your palm, and this size knife works well for that.
AUS-8 steel is great on sharpness and edge retention. I hear, "wah, I want tool steel." Most people who make that complaint don't use a knife enough to even get around to sharpening them. Tool steel is not fun to sharpen (and I have an Edgepro). Also, if you're snapping your blades in half with "wah, non-tool steel," maybe you're not using those knives for the purpose they're designed for. AUS-8 is a good quality material that is more than adequate for the average Joe's needs.
The assisted opening mechanism works very well; it has a very audible, strong snap, but can be disabled if you're in a state that doesn't allow assisted-opening knives. I have not disabled mine; I am fortunate to live in a state where the cops are friendly. You'll need a Torx wrench; not sure of the size.
I've had the liner locks fail in a Benchmade Mini-Stryker and a Microtech Mini-Socom (both failures to lock open). While the CRKT's LAWKS system can't prevent a bad opening, it does helps eliminate the issue of accidental disengagement during use. If you've got fat fingers or press down wrong, you can squeeze a liner lock in and make the knife close... which would totally suck if the blade ended up clamping down on your hand! When you open the knife equipped with LAWKS, a quick flick of the thumb moves a little lever that blocks the liner lock from accidentally deactivating. I find this to be a MUST in a liner lock knife that sees regular use.
I love and hate the belt clip. The design is such that it allows deep concealment, but the clip is weak. The knife has already fallen off my pants once, and I really don't want to have to fish it out of a toilet. The steel is too thin, making it "give" too much, and it needs a more concave indentation like a Benchmade's clip to grip better. This clip may end up bending itself out. Please fix this, CRKT.
The liners on the Heiho are stainless steel, which make the knife weigh much more than a comparable Benchmade with titanium liners. I don't take issue with that, and the additional weight may make this knife a handy kubaton for those of you who like multiple uses.
I would like to see a lanyard hole.
Overall, a good knife for the money. Retails around $70, bought it for $39 plus shipping here on Amazon.
