I have a 20-year-old Coleman "white gas" lantern but it's now so old that I'm afraid to bring it in the house. I never did like bringing it inside anyway, the gas is under pressure and although it put out a lot of light, it's probably better suited for outdoor use.
So I figured with modern LED technology that there had to be a good replacement. I looked at several Coleman LED lanterns and the CPX6 seemed to have the best light output (200 lumens on high) with the best battery life (claimed 155 hours on low on one set of D cells). That's a lot more light and about 10 times more life than the AA-cell Coleman lanterns I found.
The CPX6 isn't really a backpack lightweight type, but it's small enough to store in the kitchen or closet. It seems well made (plastic) and it really does put out about the same amount of light as the small gas lantern I have -- but much safer. The light is even and goes out all 4 sides of the lantern.
The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars it that it has a kind of strange strap arrangement; they show it hanging over a 2x4. Not sure why you'd do that, I wish it had the classic handle on top. But otherwise, it's very nice, does all I wanted and more, seems well made, has a nice water-resistant on/off switch (press once for high, again for low, again to shut off) and it puts out a nice, wide, broad even light. Definitely worth the money I think.
ADDENDUM: By the way, there is a Coleman rechargeable battery pack for this lantern also. I didn't buy it, figuring a cache of D batteries would be better for a hurricane. The 4 D cell batteries fit in a vertical holder under the base of the lantern.
It clips in and pulls out, then you pop open a door and put in the batteries. The weight of the 4 D cells keeps the lantern pretty sturdy, right side up also. The base is slightly wider than the lantern also to provide a stable platform. It's covered with a sort of rubbery black coating for extra grip.
The Cree brand LED inside the lantern is surrounded by a milky-colored plastic lens. It has a silver colored cone shaped reflector at the top, and this is what allows the LED light to become more evenly distributed. LEDs are nice lights, but they are very directional, so Coleman did a good job in designing a reflector and housing to distribute the light in 360 degrees.
