Ok, Get this hawk. If the rifleman's hawk and trail hawk had a baby this thing would come out. It's the perfect balance of weight, edge size and use of a good-sized hardened hammer poll. It's made out of 1055 steel that is forged and mine came very sharp out of the box. It's not meant to be razor shape: it's a chopping woodcraft tool, not a shaver, but if you are so inclined can easily be made so, though I really wouldn't recommend it as the edge will roll when you start chopping at wood.
It handles any camp chores that one would use a hatchet or hammer for with great ease and now Cold Steel even offers a sheath for it though it's backordered as of this writing. For the price, it's peerless. Even against other offerings, you'll be hard pressed to justify dropping 200 bucks on a hand forged tomahawk that will get busted up and the handle eventually needing replacement.
This is a tool, not a safe queen, made to be used, and handle easily replaced when it needs to be replaced. Get a few of these while the prices are low and availability still plentiful and the product still in production. Go on some forums and check out the awesome modifications people are doing to cold steel hawks, expressly because they are solid well-built and cheap: the mods when done right rival any and all but the absolute top hawks out there.
As a weapon, well, not that I've used it as such, it swings very fast and throws easily. It comes with a 22 inch handle so it gives good reach. You have the choice of a lean-bit axe or a hardened hammer with a softer tough body- very effective against hard or soft targets. Be careful and have fun.
