Amazon.com: Cold Steel Recon 1 Spear Point Plain Edge Tactical Folder Knife: Sports & Outdoors Great Deal
If you take a look at my review of the Cold Steel Recon 1 Clip Point,* you will see that I am a huge fan of this knife. I had originally purchased the Recon 1 Tanto Point, which provided a longer blade, stronger lock, and grippier handle than my Emerson Super CQC-7 -- and at 1/3 the price! I later bought the Recon 1 Clip Point, which had an even more versatile blade shape, suitable for both EDC and SD applications. So when Cold Steel announced a spear point version for 2012, I couldn't wait.
The Recon 1 Spear Point is identical to the clip and tanto point versions in its ultra-strong Triad lock and ultra-grippy G-10 handle. The shape of its 4" blade is very similar to that of the clip point version, although the spear point has less belly and a broader (stronger) tip. (But if you're at all concerned about the narrowness of the tip on the clip point, have a look at thecajunblaze's brutal tests on YouTube!)
In addition to the new blade shape, I noticed two other changes on the spear point model. The first was the shape of the pocket clip. The new clip is similar to the one used in Cold Steel's Voyager series, curving down to the handle and then up again. This is in contrast to the older clip, which contacted the handle at the vertex of a sharp angle. The spear point's clip came extremely tight, as on my other Recon 1s, which I remedied with some gentle bending, followed by sanding the G-10 under the clip.
The second change is the "Tuff-Ex" finish, which Cold Steel is using in place of Teflon in 2012. (This is in keeping with Cold Steel's move away from several other brand name materials -- "Kray-Ex" replaces Kraton, "Griv-Ex" replaces Grivory, and we are even seeing "faux" G-10 on the new Micro Recon 1.) Another reviewer commented that the new finish flakes off as easily as Teflon. I have not tested the knife under hard use yet, but I did notice that the finish was less reflective than the Teflon on my tanto and clip point versions.
I wish Cold Steel would put a more durable finish on the blade (like DLC), smooth out the area under the pocket clip (as Spyderco does), and add their thumb-plate opener. But even without these wish-list enhancements, the Cold Steel Recon 1 remains one of my favorite knives and one of the best values on the market in a hard-use tactical knife. With three different blade styles -- and with new Mini (3" blade) and Micro (2" blade) versions -- there's a Recon 1 for everyone!
