Pros:
2.25" 8CrMov13 blade steel - If you know nothing about stainless steels, don't worry, this is a good one. It comes extremely sharp out of the box and is easy to maintain that razor sharp edge. If you use it a lot it will need sharpening, but the upside is that it's extremely easy to sharpen with a simple sharpening stone or contraption. There are some high-end steels on the market that hold their edge longer, requiring less-often sharpening, but that comes at the cost of being harder to sharpen. Yes, sharpening can be tricky on some of the newer high-end steels like ZDP-189, so unless your'e an aficionado, 8CrMov13 will not disappoint.
G10 handle material -Very good grip without being too "sticky" where it grabs the inside of your pocket making it harder to deploy. This material is used in some higher-priced knives as well so G10 is definitely a premium feature on this one. This knife will not slip out of your hands.
Excellent construction - Spyderco is know for a couple things, the big patented hole on the blade and their build quality. This one, although bearing the "China" name on the blade, is no exception. The quality of materials is very high, and the construction is rock solid. There is absolutely no blade play and the opening action is smooth. The lock-up on the knife is snappy and solid. the blade pivot rides on 4 bronze bushings (flat washers) and the inner liner lock is stainless steel. Both the liner lock and top of the blade have "jimping", which are ridges cut into the metal for your thumb to grip onto. Helps tremendously in handling and closing the knife, and it should NOT be present in this price range, but it is and that is very thoughtful of Spyderco.
Flat Ground Blade - FFG (full flat grind) refers to the way the blade is ground and FFG is a premium finish. It's ideal for slicing and for most tasks a bit more effective (less effort) than say a hollow ground blade.
Pocket Clip - Very nicely designed and machined pocket clip. I'm telling you, you are getting way more knife for the money with this thing - it's ridiculous. The clip holds to your belt or pocket very tightly and the smooth chrome finish makes it glide off when deploying. The clip can be adjusted to FOUR different positions to suit your carry preference! Wow!
Allen Screw Construction - The knife can be easily taken apart for cleaning with a 1.5mm and 2.0mm Allen wrenche. That means you can clean and oil it VERY EASILY. Did I mention the value here?
Cons:
I've been trying to find something wrong with this knife but I'm having trouble doing so for this price. One thing to note about 8CrMov13 is that it can rust fairly easily. If you think your knife may be getting wet or if you plan to carry it where it may come in contact with your body sweat, you may want to look at a 440c or VG-10 steel blade. A Spyderco Cat or Dragonfly 2 may be more suitable in that scenario (at almost twice the price). If you can keep it fairly dry, I would say this is 25 $ well spent.
If you don't already own a knife and are looking for a first knife, don't even think about it any longer, go ahead and get it. I have the slightly larger Persistence and now this one. I couldn't decide between the two so I went ahead and got both. They are really not much different in size so unless you collect or don't mind having many, I would recommend you get just one, the Ambitious. The blade (cutting edge) is 2.25", which is just about perfect for most cutting chores like breaking down boxes, peeling fruit, cutting rope, etc, without being too small. It really feels like a large knife in your hand because of the weight and grip, yet small enough to clip on your waist or go in your pocket. The wide, meaty, FFG blade will power through most anything with little effort. With this size knife, you also get the added benefit of not scaring your co-workers in an office environment. The Persistence, while only 1/2" longer, has a slightly more elongated and pointy shaped blade, which in some office environments may be seen as somewhat intimidating (think mini butcher knife), even though I personally would argue that. The Ambitious is just the right size to be extremely effective at cutting, without being too heavy or intimidating. It's actually kind of "cute". Anyhow, I highly recommend this knife and I challenge anyone to find a better knife for 25 bucks.
Side Note: If this knife was assembled in the good ole' U.S.A, it would likely cost twice as much and I'm not convinced that the quality can get any better in this price-range of knife. Globalization is blatantly present here, and that means a tremendous value for you and I. I would love to see more quality like this out of China. Hope you enjoyed the review!
