Black Diamond Sprinter Headlamp Review
I run about 1200 miles a year, often outside when it is pitch black in the early morning or late evening. Over the years I have collected an assortment of running lights, and recently bought this headlamp to replace a Petzl Tikki headlamp that worked fine, but I wanted something brighter. This product is one of my best running purchases. Here is why I like it:
1. This is the brightest running headlamp that I have used; it is rated at 68 lumens on full power. I keep it on the high setting all the time since I no longer have to worry about replacing batteries (this comes with a rechargeable lithium battery and charging dock). The beam is powerful enough to illuminate the entire width of the traffic lane I am running in as well as a path at least 100 feet ahead.
2. With headlamps that are not as bright, often I had to choose between illuminating the ground right in front of me (which required pointing the light down) or having it at the optimum position for alerting oncoming traffic (which required pointing the light up). With this headlamp I have no such problem, because even when it is pointed in the optimum position for oncoming traffic to see it (straight out rather than angled downward), I can easily see the road in front of me.
3. The angle of the headlamp can easily be adjusted (although there are no click settings, the light still stays in position). However, because the beam is bright enough to illuminate the path in front of me even when aimed at oncoming traffic, as a practical matter I just leave it in the upper most position most of the time, with the only exception being when I am running on a trail in a local park where oncoming traffic is not a concern but rough terrain is.
4. This is comfortable to wear. The front headlamp and rear battery pack are well balanced. I soon forget that I am even wearing this, especially because it is the lightest headlamp I have used since there are no batteries in the headlamp itself.
5. This is easy to use. One click turns on the headlamp at the high setting with a solid light; double click and you get a strobe; or single click a second time and hold the switch down to dim the light.
There is no way to save a dimmed setting since each time you turn the headlamp on it is on high. But as a practical matter it is so easy to dim the light that this is not an issue.
In addition, since this is rechargeable and I don't have to worry about the cost of batteries, I just leave it on high all the time. The directions say that on high the battery will last 5 hours, and my runs never come close to that (medium setting is listed at 10 hours and the lowest setting is listed at 64 hours).
6. The strap cannot be fully disconntected from the headlamp, so you can't pop it into your washing machine. But it is pretty easy to hand wash this--which is what the directions say to do.
7. Besides a front light, there is a red light on the rear of the battery pack that flashes each time the headlamp is turned on. I find that very useful when I run in a park at night so that cyclists coming up behind me can easily see me. It's also added protection when running on the road. You can turn the red strobe off (there is no solid mode) if you like with a switch on the rear battery pack.
8. This comes with an optional top strap that goes over the top of your head from front to back. I definitely recommend using it. Not only does it keep the headlamp more securely in place, but you can loosen the headlamp strap around your head with the top strap in place, which I find more comfortable.
9. I ran the other night for about 90 minutes in a slushy rain storm. Aside from having to occasionally wipe some accumulated slush off the headlamp, I had no problems using this headlamp under those conditions.
10. This headlamp is not inexpensive, but it is well made and durable.
Bottom line: If you are looking for a running headlamp, I definitely recommend this product for performance and comfort.
Update February 14, 2012: I just realized after receiving a comment that the headlamp I bought in a different color is the 2011 model because it is rated at 68 lumens rather than 75, and more importantly does not have a USB charger. The Titanium is apparently the only color currently in the 2012 lineup. In any event, whichever model year you buy, this is a great running headlamp.
